I have tickets for a dress rehearsal for the ballet....what is appropriate to wear?

For a few decades now, dress for fine arts events has been a do-as-you-choose affair. At least in larger cities and major venues, you'll see the range from tuxedo to denim.

Now, in a regular performance, those in the "dress circle" (the front rows of the balcony) have a certain expectation for elegance.

But for a dress rehearsal? Be comfortable. And if anyone looks at you funny, it's their problem. After all, the primary purpose of the audience is to appreciate--not to model.

Hope it helps :)
slacks and a nice sweater or blouse, skirt, dress...much like you would go out to a nice restaurant for dinner...not fancy theatre dress...some folks will be even more casual, but I've never appreciated that
When you go to a dress rehearsal you still want to look just as good as you woul as if you were to go to the final show. No one will ever tell you if you look too good for an occasion.
Well dress nice, but remember it is a rehearsal which makes it in no way a "black tie affair."

I recommend going more for 'sophisticated' rather than 'classy'. Rather then doing the black strapless dress, open toed heels, shawl, route...just wear nice black pants, black turtleneck and business heels. You want to look artsy, mature, and intelligent, not rich and high class (like you would at an actual ballet.)
I would dress in a simple dress or skirt and sweater to be on the safe side. Solid colors and nice conservative dress shoes with flat or low heels and hosery.Simple jewelry. Nothing austentacious. That way you will not be over dressed or too underdressed and fit in even if it turns out to be pretty casual.
